On a temporary assignment in Durham, North Carolina, a recently divorced 40-something woman surprises herself by joining a neighborhood book club with a group of charming older ladies, all mother-in-laws who need major advice. But things get juicy when she falls in love with one of their sons.

At work, Andi, a consultant who specializes in family businesses, is known as "the boomer whisperer". But on her way to Durham for her next assignment, Andi, fresh off a divorce in which her own mother-in-law played no small part, snaps when she hears two older ladies complaining loudly about the perceived shortcomings of their sons' daughters.

What Andi doesn't see coming is one of the ladies, sheepish about what Andi overheard, inviting her to join for her book club's next meeting. The other members are all mother-in-laws in need of advice, and Andi, she's sure, is just the woman to help.

With this group, Andi forms deep and unexpected friendships, and finds a community in Durham that makes her want to put down roots for the first time. It doesn't hurt that she's started up a secret romance with her new friend's son. But when she realizes that their fling might be turning into the real deal, she'll have to decide what she's willing to sacrifice to make it work.
